First of all, we need to ensure that your system meets the recommended system requirements for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, or at the very least the minimum system requirements.

Minimum System Requirements

Recommended System Requirements

Update Your GPU Driver

You probably hear it alot, but you need to ensure that your GPU drivers are up-to-date. Especially for newly released games, both AMD and NVIDIA release new drivers that are specifically optimized to run those games.

It’s very easy to update your AMD or NVIDIA drivers. Just click on one of the buttons below, which will take you to the download pages. You can also use AMD’s (AMD Radeon Software) or NVIDIA’s (NVIDIA GeForce Experience) own software to update the drivers.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare NVIDIA Settings Optimization

If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, there are some additional optimizations that you can do in NVIDIA Control Panel.

Do not expect it to do as much of an impact as your in-game settings and hardware though.

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel
    Nvidia Control Panel
  2. Click on Manage 3D settings
Nvidia Control Panel Manage 3d Settings

Change Your PC's Power Plan

You can improve your FPS in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare  simply by changing your PC’s power plan. By default, the power plan of your PC is set to Balanced. You need to set it to High performance.

Here’s how you do it:

  1. Press on the Windows key to bring up the start menu
  2. Type powercfg.cpl and press Enter
  3. Now select the High performance optionHigh Performance Power Plan

Discord Hardware Acceleration

Most of you are probably using Discord to voice-chat while playing games. Optimize Discord by disabling Hardware Acceleration.

This will improve the performance in all games.

  1. In Discord, go to User Settings
    Discord User Settings
  2. Click on Appearance and disable Hardware Acceleration
    Discord Hardware Acceleration

Google Chrome Hardware Acceleration

Like with Discord, Google Chrome uses hardware acceleration as well. You can improve performance in games slightly by turning this feature off.

  1. In Google Chrome, go to Settings
  2. On the left tab, click on Advanced and then on System
  3. Make sure Use hardware acceleration when available is unchecked

Game Mode

Game Mode is a Windows 10 feature that will optimize your PC for play when enabled. We recommend enabling this feature.

It will not have a big impact on higher-end systems, but for everything else, enabling Game Mode can definitely have a noticeable impact, especially if you run many background applications.

  1. Open the Windows start menu and type: Game Mode settings. If your PC can’t find the setting, then try
    • Open the Settings menu by clicking on the cogwheel icon in the Windows start menu
    • Click on the Gaming section
      Windows Gaming Settings
    • Click on Game Mode on the left sidebar
  2. Now set Game Mode to On.

Optimize Your Windows System For The Best Performance

If you’re still not satisfied with your FPS, you can optimize your Windows system and squeeze that extra bit of performance out of it. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the Windows start menu and type: View advanced system settings and click on the search result
  2. Now click on Settings under Performance
    Windows Advanced Settings Performance
  3. Select Adjust for best performance and click on OK

Background Applications

The last tip should be an obvious one – don’t run any unnecessary background applications.

For example, you should disable OneDrive if you are not using it. Simply right-click on the OneDrive icon in the taskbar and close it.

Optimize Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Settings

Let’s wrap things up and optimize the in-game settings of your Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or Call of Duty: Warzone settings.

Display Mode

Always set this value to Fullscreen. This ensures that you get the best possible performance.

Do not use windowed or fullscreen windowed.

Refresh Rate

Set the refresh rate to your monitor’s native refresh rate. We highly recommend having a monitor with a refresh rate of 144Hz or above for the best possible gaming experience and performance in FPS games.

Display Resolution

Set this to your monitor’s native resolution.

Most people use 1920×1080.

Render Resolution

Set the render resolution to 100%. This ensures the best performance and that the game gets rendered at the display resolution you have set above.

It is better to change the display resolution rather than the render resolution if you need to change the resolution of the game for better performance.

Aspect Ratio

Set this to Auto.

Vertical Sync

Set this to Off. Having this enabled will introduce input lag, and we don’t want that.

Framerate Limit

Set this to Unlimited.

HDR

Set this to Off unless your PC can handle it. It’s a nice visual boost but comes at the cost of performance.

Brightness

Set this to whatever you feel like. No impact on performance.

Display Gamma

Set this to whatever you feel like. No impact on performance.

Display Adapter

This should be set to your graphics card.

Texture Quality

We recommend setting this to High as it will greatly increase the performance

Special Effects Quality

Set this to Medium. You can also set this to Low if you want fewer distractions – most professionals do!

Texture Filtering Quality

Set this to Medium. This setting does not have a high impact on performance so this setting will provide the best balance between visuals and performance.

Screen Space Reflection

Set this to Off. You don’t want distractions reflecting on surfaces.

Special Effect Shadow

Set this to Off. Having this turned off will give a nice boost to the performance in weaker systems.

Shadow Quality

Set this to Medium. This will give the best balance between graphics and performance.

Anti-Aliasing Quality

Set this to Medium. Here are the settings:

  • Very Low: FXAA
  • Low: SMAA 1x
  • Medium: Filmic SMAA 1x
  • High SMAA T2x
  • Very High: Filmic SMAA T2x

Ambient Occlusion Quality

Set this to Medium for a balanced gaming experience.

Motion Blur

Set this to Off. Most professional players do not use motion blur, as it allows you to quickly see what’s going on when turning fast.

Order Independent Transparency

Set this to Medium. This will clear transparency surfaces and make it easier for you to scan enemies through transparent objects.

Conclusion

If you have followed this guide, then you should now have much higher frame rates in the game. Enjoy!
